Usually the cassettes reviewed in Vital Weekly are pretty standard sort of looking: box, J-card (xeroxed, printed), cassette. In that sense the current wave of cassettes doesn’t exactly reflect the 80s, when a lot more was done with packaging (milk carton, pyramids, oversized print work, sponge). These three tapes (ignoring the six month rule) hail from Indonesia and look great. Two of them in a small carton box or as the website for the first: ‘hand-numbered edition of 37, hand-stamped gold natural resin wax seal, pro-dubbed gray tapes in handmade recycled paper boxes with mixed shredded atlas map & newspaper inside’, or ‘ hand-stamped starry black natural resin wax seal, pro-dubbed kelly green tapes in handmade corrugated paper boxes with hemp rope & hidden hermit crab shells inside’ – now that’s more like it. The music, all from 2010 and 2011, is all made with a Korg MS-10, electronics and tapes. Now one could easily think that all of these sound similar given these limitations, but its not. ‘Reading’ is can be found more in an ambient/cosmic corner of the musical spectrum, as well as ‘Meturo’, but the latter has also some field recordings and is less static, more with small arpeggio’s. The ‘in between’ release of ‘In The Cave’ is on the other hand more an old fashioned industrial release, with a grittier sound and louder sustaining music. Here I was reminded of Maurizio Bianchi in his earlier, ‘Plain Truth’, years. A bit more industrial sounding, but done in a very delicate way. No harsh noise walls here, but a cold clinical mechanical sound, producing some hypnotic trance like music. Three excellent tapes – a great surprise. (FdW – Vital Weekly 804)

If there’s no constraint, I’m scheduled to give a small lecture & presentation at Intermedia Studio class, Faculty of Fine Arts, Bandung Institute of Technology next Monday 19/09. Pretty excited to meet & have discussions with the younger & fresh brains from the alma mater.

Anyway, I will have couple new tapes coming very soonish. Stay tuned.

Tokyo was totally amazing experience!

Ate a lot of raw fish, drunk a lot of radioactive water… nah, just kidding on the later one. But definitely met a lot of very nice people & new friends that I already missed. Many many thanks for Backers & AIT members for all supports to m
ake the residency program & exhibition such a great success.

I’m already back in the country now, ready for some new action. I’m in the middle preparing couple new tapes too. Made some recordings while I was in Tokyo. So expect them to be dropped soon.

The BAR vol.5 Exhibition “Rounds”
New works from Syagini Ratna Wulan and Duto Hardono

I’m gonna have an exhibition as part of the BAR artist residency program that I’ve been attending here in Tokyo. It’s a two-person exhibition with another Indonesian artist Syagini Ratna Wulan. The exhibition will be held in Hiromi Yoshii Roppongi Gallery, from May 28 – June 11, 2011. The opening will be on this Saturday, May 28 at 18:00 – 20:00 with performance pieces from the artists too. So please come join us if you’re in the area, it’d be superfun! See ya!

Dear friends,

I’ll be away from April – June as I take part in an Artist Residency program from AIT & Backers Foundation in Tokyo, Japan.  I’ll also have an exhibition in the end of the residency program here. I’m so excited to be invited here. This city is amazing!

I’m gonna have a solo exhibition at Selasar Sunaryo Art Space, Bandung this weekend. Titled “Good Love, Bad Joke”, it will provide some of my recent works varies from drawings, installations to performance. The opening will be on this Saturday Dec 18th 2010 at 4 PM and there will be a performance/composition piece by Duto Hardono’s Infinite Wind Breakers in the opening, so make sure you catch it up.The exhibition will be run until January 15th 2011.

Selasar Solo Project series is a new periodic event at Selasar Sunaryo Art Space that aims to present individual projects by different artists at the same time. It challenges artists to conquer different spaces and site-specific environment in the gallery compound, or to present a recent body of works with focus on particular theme. Selasar Solo Project series give the respective artist an opportunity to stand out face to face, comment and respond to each other’s project more openly.

Duto Hardono (born Jakarta, 1985) works with different material and medium, including sound, drawing, video and performance. Good Love, Bad Joke comprises his new series of drawings and collages, tape and film loop, and performance about repetition, loop and delay. Hardono draws inspiration from different sources, from craft work, pop culture, anti-art movement, dark humour and nihilism.
